The Ontario Fair Housing Plan, introduced today by the Ontario provincial government consists of 16 measures designed to address concerns, real or perceived, in Ontario’s housing market.
The most prominent of these measures is a 15-per-cent tax on foreign home buyers, capping rent increases across the province, and steps to bring more housing supply into the market.
There are some positive things contained in this announcement but there is a lot not to like, especially for Landlords. With Premier Kathleen Wynne facing a dismally low approval rating in the province many of the measures can be seen as attempts at improving popularity with large cohorts of Ontario voters with the next election looming in June 2018.
