Glen Abbey Golf Course – 27 times host of the Canadian Open tournament, headquarters of Golf Canada and the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Rumours have circulated for several years about the development of Glen Abbey Golf Course but the topic gained new legs last month by statements made by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. The proposal calls for the construction of nearly 3,000 residential units as well as mixed-use office and retail space on the upper portion of the course. The lower portion (valley) would be designated for walking trails and/or public park space. Development of the site of the course will undoubtedly be a highly contentious and polarizing local issue. In recent months two other courses in the immediate area, Saw Whet and Deerfield, have been at the center of intense public debate over rezoning of these properties. As a side note, the Canadian Open brings in an estimated $18 million to the Oakville economy every year it hosts the event, according to Golf Canada. Here is the full article.
